More about Fusion Splicing
The permanent joining of two strands of fibre is achieved through fusing the two ends together in perfect alignment. When joining two fibres, it is essential that the two cores are properly aligned and the two faces are clean and perpendicular to the fibre as shown in Figure 1.
If the fibre cores are misaligned as shown in Figure 2 then a splice loss is incurred.
This loss can roughly be calculated as on fifth of the square of the misalignment. Therefore great care needs to be taken to ensure that the cores are well aligned. This is especially in important in single mode fibre.
Losses also occur if an angle is introduced in the join, as shown in Figure 3. To avoid this, care must be taken when cleaving the fibres.
An end gap between optical fibers causes a connector splice loss. In addition the change in refractive index between the fiber and the air can result in a reflection with a return loss of around 0.6dB.
Care must be taken to clean the fibre ends, with alcohol, as dirt can lead to problems with gaps, alignment of further attenuation.
